Regional Cost Differences: London vs. the Rest of the UK

How much your postcode actually affects your wedding budget, and where the gap is biggest.

An 'Our Wedding Cost List' card breaking down estimated and actual spend across venue, catering, and other categories.

The same wedding - same guest count, same broad style - can cost meaningfully different amounts depending on where in the UK you're having it, and the gap is bigger than most national "average cost" figures let on, because those averages blend together markets that don't really compare.

London and the South East carry the biggest premium, across almost every category - venue hire, catering per head, photographer day rates, florist pricing. Part of this is straightforward cost-of-living and commercial rent pass-through; part of it is simply deeper demand meeting limited supply, especially for the most in-demand Saturday dates.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the North of England tend to offer more for the same budget - not because the work or quality is lower, but because venue hire and supplier day rates are generally lower outside the South East. This is a genuine practical reason some couples choose to marry somewhere other than where they live, beyond the styling appeal covered elsewhere on this site.

What actually narrows the gap, regardless of region:

  • Day of the week and time of year matter more than region alone. An off-peak weekday wedding in an expensive area can cost less than a peak Saturday in a cheaper one - don't assume region is the only lever available to you.
  • Travelling suppliers add their own cost regardless of venue location - a photographer based two hours from your venue will often (reasonably) charge for travel time, which can quietly erase some of a "cheaper region" saving if your supplier list isn't also local.
  • Guest travel costs shift the other direction - a cheaper venue in a remote area can mean higher total cost to your guests collectively, even if your own spend is lower, which is worth factoring in if guest experience matters to you as much as your own budget.

The honest takeaway: don't pick a region purely on cost-per-venue without accounting for supplier travel and guest logistics - get a realistic full picture, not just the headline venue price, before assuming a cheaper region guarantees a cheaper wedding overall. See the fuller budget breakdown for how to build that full picture.
